King Kuntibhoja had no children so he adopted the daughter of his brother. Her name was Kunti and she had some very fine qualities.Once the sage Durvasa visited Kuntibhoja and was very pleased with the service and devotion of Kunti. So,before he left he taught her a mantra and told her that by properly reciting it she would be able to invoke the presence of any god.

Out of curiosity one day,she tried using the mantra and to her amazement Surya the Sun God appeared before her.Surya explained the meaning of the mantra to Kunti who became very ashamed of her childishness. However,as Surya explained, this mantra of Durvasa was very powerful and must produce the results it is capable of producing.

Surya had pity on her and told her that a son will be born to her after which her body will return to a state of virginity and she would be sinless.

In due time Kunti gave birth to a son and he was born with some extra ordinary features. He was born with a Kavacha(an armour) and a Kundala(earings). She wrapped the child in a piece of silk and placing him in a basket, she then placed it in the river Ganga.
